:Higher than usual precipitation in August, slightly above average temps in September expected

ALPENA -- August was wetter than normal in Alpena, with precipitation almost two inches above normal.
In terms of temperatures, the Alpena area was on par with the long-term temperature averages.
According to the National Weather Service, Alpena saw 4.76 inches of precipitation in August. The normal amount of precipitation for the month is 3.09 inches
National Weather Service Meteorologist Sean Christensen said that the wettest August on record for Alpena was in 1994. Precipitation totaled 6.26 inches that year.
The highest amount of precipitation was recorded on Aug. 5 at 1.73 inches.
Christensen said that there are a lot of variables that go into the amount of rainfall in a given month. In the summer months, the amount of precipitation often fluctuates from year to year.
"Temperature wise it was slightly below normal," Christensen said.
The high temperature averaged out to 77.4 degrees in August. The long-term average is 78.8 degrees. The highest recorded temperature this August occurred on Aug. 4 at 86 degrees.
The low temperature averaged out to 55.9 degrees in August. The multi-year average is 54.5 degrees. The lowest recorded temperature was 47 degrees recorded on Aug. 20 and Aug. 28.
The overall average temperature for the month came out to 66.7 degrees, which is about the same as the multi-year average of 66.6 degrees.
In September, forecasts show that temperatures are looking to be "ever so slightly" above average, Christensen said. Precipitation is expected to be around normal for the rest of the month.
For the next week, temperatures are predicted to trend a little bit above normal. The next several days will be warmer and drier than typical.
According to the National Weather Service, patchy fog is expected Wednesday night and Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms are also expected Wednesday.
The rest of the week is expected to be mostly sunny with highs in the 70s and lows in the upper 50s.
The extended forecast predicts temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s with only a slight chance of rain for Labor Day Weekend.
