ALPENA -- This month is shaping up to be a busy one at the Alpena County Library. Below is a list of events and programs in the coming days and weeks.
Troy Graham will perform his music on Thursday from 5:30p.m. until 7 p.m. in the Stillion Conference Room.
A native of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, singer and songwriter Troy Graham is a versatile musician known for his expressive vocals, guitar, and harmonica. Over a career spanning more than two decades, he has released a dozen albums as both a solo artist and a member of various bands. Drawing inspiration from folk, bluegrass, Americana, indie rock, alternative music, and heavy metal, Graham has built a loyal following throughout the Midwest through performances at libraries, community events, concert venues, and festivals.
On Sept. 9, from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. there is an informative program called “Spotting Health Misinformation Online." The event will be in the Stillion Conference Room.
“Michigan Sunken Secrets” will be presented on Sept. 18 from 5:30 p.m. until 7p.m. Ready to explore the "Golden Age of Shipwreck Hunting"? Join author and shipwreck hunter Ross Richardson for Discovering Michigan's Sunken Secrets! Learn the thrilling stories behind Michigan's most baffling maritime mysteries--and of his own discoveries of long-lost vessels and aircraft. This immersive program highlights cutting-edge tools like side-scan sonar and underwater robotics that are rewriting Great Lakes history and what we know about the bottom of our lakes.
The Pokemon Club is held on alternate Mondays open to youth ages eight years old to 18 years old. This month, the club meets on Sept.14 and Sept. 28 from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the youth department upstairs.
Attendees will learn how to play Pokémon, battle peers, trade cards, do crafts, and watch Pokémon. Attendees should bring their own cards to the meet-up, but the Library will also have some available for those who do not have their own.
No registration necessary and drop-ins are welcome.
Early Connections is a time of play and socialization for children ages zero to one year old and their caregivers. Held on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m., it’s held in the Judith Stillion Conference room and free of charge. No registration required.
Tinker Tuesday is held from 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. in the MakerSpace off the Stillion Conference Room. A free program, Tinker Tuesday is about getting together and exploring projects ranging from Makey Makey, Raspberry Pi, Arduino, 3D Printing, Strawbees, littleBits, Snap Circuits, sewing and more! Let your curiosity take over and explore! Participants must be 5 years old or older.
Puppet Show Storytime is held on Tuesdays in the youth department upstairs from 4 – 4:30 p.m.
Open MakerLab is held in the MakerSpace upstairs from 10 a.m. until noon on Wednesdays. MakerLab is a collaborative space where youth, teens and adults can play, tinker, discover and create.
Weekly Storytime is held in the youth area upstairs on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. Hosted by Ms. Lydia. Each session will have stories, music, crafts, and snacks. Ages zero to five years old are welcome with a parent or caregiver.
Laser Tag is held in the Stillion Conference room on Sept. 24 from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. A free program, and registration is required to attend. Limited to 16 players per session, open to teens/tweens ages 9-17 years old. Each attendee will have the opportunity to play multiple short team games.
Beyond Differences is a friendship club for all promoting kindness, inclusion, and acceptance. Ages 12-21 years old and it is held in the Stillion Conference Room on Sept. 11 from 4 p.m. until 5:30 p.m.
D & D One Shot is open to ages 12-18 years old, and has six spots available. Link to register, visit the event page at https://www.alpenalibrary.org/
The Lego Club is held on Sept. 21 from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. in the youth area. Builders ages six to thirteen years old will compete in building challenges, collaborate with fellow builders, or free build! We'll provide the bricks and base plate, so please leave your personal LEGO bricks at home so they won't get lost or mixed in with our assortment. All abilities are welcome. Creations will stay at the library and be displayed until the following meet-up!
Hands On Science, held on Sept. 26 from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. in the youth area.
Calling all junior scientists and space detectives! Put your investigation skills to the test with a series of hands-on science challenges. Examine rocks to see if they might be from outer space, create UV-reactive crafts, use lasers and mirrors to hit targets, and make your very own slime while learning about chemical reactions. Come experiment, explore, and see where your curiosity takes you!
On Oct. 1, “Tales from Beyond” will be presented in the Stillion Conference Room from 5 – 6 pm.
“Estate Planning Horror Stories” is planned for Oct. 7 from 2:30 p.m. until 4 p.m. in the Stillion Conference Room. Join local estate planning attorney Ben Harpe from Harris Law, P.C. for a lighthearted presentation featuring estate planning “horror stories” and how to avoid some common pitfalls. Through real-life anecdotes and examples, you’ll see how thoughtful planning can ensure that your wishes are carried out and your family is protected.
