ALPENA – This weekend the Thunder Bay Area Fire Fighters Association is sponsoring a "big rig" rescue class in Alpena Township. By definition, "big rig" includes over-the-road tractor trailers and heavy construction machinery. Students are expected from many area fire departments.
Fire Departments already have skills and equipment to deal with accidents involving regular passenger cars and pick-up trucks. This class focuses on the supporting and lifting of the heavy weights associated with big rigs. Georgie's Towing, with their heavy duty wreckers, is providing the vehicles and work space for the training. The training is being provided by Advanced Rescue Solutions from Indiana, with equipment being loaned by Impact Rescue, a Holmatro rescue tool distributor.
This training is only possible due to the generosity of county citizens who contribute annually through the Thunder Bay Area Firefighter's Association Firefighters' Dinner held each year at the A-plex and their annual golf outing held each summer.
A classroom session with be held from 6 to 10 this Friday evening at the Alpena Township Hall. A practical hands-on session will be held this Saturday and Sunday at the towing yard at 2316 Bloom Road.
