LANSING – U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Michigan State Director Dom Restuccia today announced $525,000 in grants for Montcalm Central Public Schools and Friends of the Hubbard Lake Center.
"As school starts up again, these projects are reminders of how USDA Rural Development is helping school districts and libraries," said Restuccia. "Under the leadership of President Donald Trump and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins, we are making major investments in rural communities across Michigan."
USDA provided funding through Rural Development's Community Facilities Program. The program offers direct loans, loan guarantees and grants to develop or improve essential public services and facilities in rural communities.
"Rural communities deserve the same opportunities and quality of life as anywhere in America," Congressman Jack Bergman said. "These investments will give families access to better childcare, students and seniors a stronger community hub, and our veterans the resources they deserve. I'm proud to work with the Trump Administration to deliver real results for rural Michigan and make sure our communities have the tools they need to grow and thrive."
The Friends of the Hubbard Lake Center, in Alpena County, will use a $300,000 grant to purchase furnishings and technology to equip the county's library and community center. The items include bookshelves, tables, chairs, computers, desks, books, and accessories for gathering spaces that support public programs and community use. These resources will help ensure the facility is welcoming, operational, and accessible for veterans, seniors, students, families, and all patrons.
"Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to meet with the exceptional staff at the Central Montcalm Public Schools and seeing their vision for providing a safe and secure learning environment for children," said Congressman John Moolenaar. "The federal funding I secured for this project will promote the educational development of children in Stanton and the surrounding area. I am grateful for USDA's Rural Development programs and will continue to support their efforts to invest in our communities."
Central Montcalm Public Schools, in Montcalm County, will use a $225,000 grant to renovate unused classrooms and convert them into licensable space for daycare and before- and after-school programs. The existing rooms and outdoor areas will receive updates to meet childcare licensing requirements. In addition to the building updates, the school district will also build a new playground.
