ALPENA – The Robert Finch Camp of Traverse City, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, is honoring the life of Alpena County resident Private George Van Wagoner as the Last Veteran of the Civil War in Alpena County.
The service will be held at the Wilson Twp Cemetery on King Settlement Road, in Alpena County, on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Private Van Wagoner was a veteran of the Civil War. After the war, he settled in Alpena County and later became well known in the area for his vast strawberry farm. He passed away in 1939 and was the last veteran of the Civil War buried in Alpena County.
The Finch Camp will perform a special tribute for Private Van Wagoner and the local VFW will provide full military honors.
The public is invited to attend.
