ALPENA -- The Gone to Pieces Quilt Guild is hosting a Friendship Day at the Methodist Church located at 167 S. Ripley Blvd. in Alpena on Sept. 19th from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The Guild members make 200 placemats each year for the Alpena Senior Centers Meals on Wheels program. They also make quilts for wheelchair bound veterans, Alpena Baby Pantry, patients of Medilodge, partners with Kiwanis Kwilting with Preemie Pals in donating quilts for Ann Arbor's University of Michigan's Brandon New-Natal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) located at Mott Hospital for children prenatal to 5 years old. To show our thanks to our veterans we present Quilts of Valor to many veterans during the year.
Our speaker, Diane LaBell, has made many Quilts of Valor and will inform us on how the Quilts of Valor program got started, how we can participate and she will present at least one quilt to one of our local veterans. We hope this will inspire more people to make Quilts of Valor to thank our veterans for their service.
More than a hundred members belong to the Gone to Pieces Quilt Guild. They meet the first Thursday of each month at the Methodist Church and its annual dues are $25 and paid in June of each year.
On Sept. 19, there will be four vendors with fabric and other quilting items to sell. Also, a quilt and prizes will be awarded. The profit will go to purchase more batting and quilting supplies so the members can make more quilts to donate.
The Guild welcomes men, women, and anyone interested in having lunch and enjoying our display of quilts.
Tickets are $15 for the lunch and large quilt show. They can be purchased from Caroline Ritze at 989-727-3116.
