Diesel fuel spill at the Alpena Marina

ALPENA – On Friday, at approximately 2 p.m., Alpena Marina staff noticed a sheen on the water near the north end of the marina. The staff responded it immediately and determined that the spill involved approximately two gallons or less of diesel fuel.
The Harbormaster contacted the National Response Center, which coordinated contact with representatives from the U.S. Coast Guard and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
Marina staff also notified the Alpena Department of Public Works and the Alpena Fire Department. Together, crews began working to contain the spill. The Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center Fire Department was contacted and provided additional containment booms.
An EGLE representative arrived on scene and assisted with the containment efforts. At this time, approximately 90-95% of the spill has been contained. Marina staff are actively monitoring the situation and making adjustments as needed to maintain containment.
There is no immediate threat to the public, waterfowl, or aquatic life. The community's drinking water remains safe.This response required the cooperation of several departments and many dedicated personnel working together to protect the public and the environment. Crews will continue monitoring the situation throughout the weekend.
