Boys and Girls Club volunteers to improve Island Park

ALPENA – The Youth Volunteer Corps of the Alpena Boys & Girls Club spent two summer days helping improve Island Park. In June the youth spread wood chips on Island trails, both helping to control erosion and improve the nature walking experience for Island visitors. In July they picked three huge bags of invasive plants (spotted knapweed, leafy spurge, white clover, autumn olive and mullein) to help protect the native flowers and plants that keep the Island beautiful for all, as well as helping native birds and other wildlife. Under the leadership of Rose Jasman, the Boys & Girls Club Social Emotional Learning Coordinator, and the educational direction of Terry Gougeon, Alpena Wildlife Sanctuary Board member, the youth enthusiastically worked hard to improve Island Park for all of us.
