HARRISVILLE -- There are a host of fun and educational things planned at the Alcona County library this month. Below is a schedule and brief description of the fun in store for people of all ages.
Today at 2 p.m. is Painted Book Edges craft. Paint the edges of a book to create a colorful, decorative finish. All supplies will be provided and there is a limit of eight participants, ages 15 years old and older,Call 989-724-6796 to register. This program is funded through a grant from the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan.
This event will also be offered on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Mikado branch,.Aug. 11 at noon at the Curtis Township Library in Glennie, and Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. at the Hubbard Lake branch.
On Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Friends of Alcona County Library will hold their regular monthly meeting at the Harrisville branch.
On Thursday at 1:30 p.m., kids of all ages are invited to enjoy the summer vibes and soapy shimmer of our Big Bubble Dance Party.
On Friday at the Harrisville branch it is Free Popcorn Friday. Stop by and help yourself to a bag of theater-style popcorn, while supplies last.
On Saturday at noon, The Yes Committee of the Friends of Alcona County Library wish to thank the community for their support of the library during our millage campaign, so we’re showing our gratitude with a free ice cream social.
Every Monday at 10:30 a.m. is Music & Movement with Miss Melanie at the Harrisville branch. Our weekly program for kids ages 0-5 years old. This event will get the kids singing and dancing together.
On Tuesdays at 10 a.m. is a Ukulele Jam. People can learn to strum crowd-pleasing songs both old and new with our welcoming collective of musicians, at the main branch in Harrisville.
On Aug. 18 at 1:15 pm is the Knitting Klub and Crochet for all practitioners of the fiber arts, beginner to advanced.
On Wednesdays at 1 p.m. there is home schooled and alternatively-schooled youth are invited to partake in the library's weekly S.T.E.A.M. activity, intended for school-age kids who are able to read.
On Thursdays at 9 a.m. the Walking Club for everyone will meet. Participants will meet in the parking lot at the main branch for an enjoyable stroll through Harrisville before the library opens.
On Thursdays at the Harrisville branch there is Story Time and Craft for young children. The library's Children’s Specialist Melanie will read a story aloud, and lead a craft for young patrons and their grownups to enjoy. All Summer long, in addition to its usual 10:30 a.m. time in Harrisville, this event will also be held every Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Curtis Township Library and 3 p.m. at the Mikado branch, as well as Wednesdays at 11 a.m. in Lincoln, and Mondays at 1p.m. at the new Hubbard Lake branch.
Each Friday at 11 a.m. at the Harrisville State Park there is a park story and craft event. Join Miss Melanie for a nature-themed story and craft at the Harrisville State Park pavilion. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for entry.
On Fridays at noon is the Creativity Club in the community room. Working on a creative project? Show others what you’re working on, share ideas and enjoy free refreshments. This program is supported by a grant from the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan.
On Aug. 14, and Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. there is a family movie matinee. Enjoy a kid-friendly movie and free theater-style popcorn. Call the library at 724-6796 with any questions about the movie.
On Aug. 8 and 22 at 11 a.m. at the Harrisville branch there is the Bedazzled book cover craft.
Join staff for a creative workshop where we'll decorate book covers using rhinestones. Participants can create a sparkling, one-of-a-kind book cover to take home. For ages 15 and up. Supplies will be provided, or bring your own hardcover book. This program is funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan (CFNEM).
This event will also be offered on Aug. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Mikado branch, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. at the Lincoln branch, Aug. 25 at noon at the Curtis Township Library, and Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. at the Hubbard Lake branch.
On Aug. 12 at 5:30 p.m. is Battles for Michigan. Join master storyteller Clif Edwards for a captivating hour, to hear about intriguing characters serving different flags in Michigan's tumultuous evolution to statehood.
On Aug. 15 at noon, at Curtis Township Library in Glennie, learn about the “Salmon in the Classroom” educational program, presented by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
On Aug. 15 at 1 p.m., fans of Pokemon are invited to join the library’s Pokemon Club! Learn to play the Pokemon Battle Academy trading card game with fellow aspiring Pokemon trainers.
On Aug. 19 at 5:30 p.m., local author and animal lover Lucy Niles will read and discuss her new book “Max the Greatest,” a true story of her beloved cat. Copies will be available for purchase to support the Humane Society.
On Aug. 22 at 1 p.m. the Cookbook Club will hold its regular monthly meeting. Copies of this month’s cookbook will be available at the circulation desk.
On Aug. 26 at 2:00 p.m., the Alcona County Library Board of Trustees will hold their regular monthly meeting at the Harrisville branch.
On Aug. 24 at noon, the Alcona Book Club will hold its regular monthly meeting to discuss “Everything Is Tuberculosis” by John Green. Copies are available at the Harrisville circulation desk.
