ALPENA – Next week is going to be busy for the Alpena Lifelong Learners, as there are fun, exciting, and educational events planned. Below is a brief description of each, along with other information.
What is Esports? Monday, ACC Madeline Briggs Center 140, 1-2:30 p.m.
Esports is one of the new up and rising sports being spread across the world! For many Colleges, Esports has only been around in Collegiate levels for 3-5 years and a lot more are establishing first year programs as time passes. Esports is a very positive thing that can offer Collegiate Level Competition to a more diverse crowd of people compared to the traditional sports (Baseball, Basketball, Volleyball, etc). ACC had a very impressive season in Esports, with the IR Rocket League Team winning the NECC D8 National Championship! Come and find out what it is all about. Aaron Guitar is the Athletics Office Coordinator and Head Esports Coach at ACC. Aaron is entering his second year for both positions. He graduated from Utica High School in 2020 and went to ACC for 4 years receiving two Associate Degrees (One in Electrical Maintenance and the other in Business Management.
Ann Gilner, Artist: The Eagle has Landed Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1:30 - 3 p.m., ACC Madeline Briggs Center 140
Ann Gilner was one of two artists who were selected to create art work to help celebrate the 250th anniversary of the USA. She created the metal sculpture "The Eagle has Landed" of steel, stainless steel, brass and rock. It was dedicated on the Alpena County Courthouse lawn in June. Ann will discuss her sculpture from inspiration to completion. Ann also created the Great Blue Herons sculpture outside Duck Park. Ann Gilner says Art was always a part of my daily life. Ann also says- my father gave me two impressionable pieces of advice 1)" Use your head." And "A problem is the beginning of a solution." Ann opened a flower shop and art gallery which she owned and operated for 35 years. Her media was clay and paint. In the local paper an add caught her eye, "Learn to weld." Ann relates-I needed to get my work outside for public viewing and metal was the answer. Wow. The first strike of the rod, I loved it. Learning to weld is understanding your tools and machine, now I had a new direction.
Artist in Residence in Shanghai China, Aug. 13, 1-2:30 p.mm, ACC Madeline Briggs Center 140
Dorothea Sandra is an international artist who lives and paints in the tiny town of Rogers City, Michigan. In early 2026, she was awarded a three-month stay at one of the world's most respected and prestigious art residencies--the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai, China. The Swatch Group in Switzerland funded her travel and accommodations. Dorothea was honored as an international artist, engaged in conversations and lived in residency with artists and writers from around the world, went to events throughout Shanghai, and got glimpses into the real China and its people. She will talk about art and international success, Shanghai's past and present, living and learning about the work of artists and writers from around the world, and the real everyday life of China's Shanghai people.
