ALPENA -- Beginning in 2026, composting bags will be required for lawn waste to be picked up curbside. Plastic bags will not be collected, the City of Alpena said in a press release on Monday.

The use of the composting bags brings multiple benefits to Alpena's composting program which include being less labor intensive, eliminating landfilling the black plastic bags, and speeds up the composting process.

The most common brown paper composting lawn bags are locally available at several retailers.

Upcoming pick up dates:

– Aug. 10 - Bagged & Brush

– Sept. 14 - Bagged Only

– Oct. 5 – Bagged & Brush

– Nov. 2 - Bagged & Brush

– Nov. 30 or Dec. 7 (weather dependent) Bagged Only

The above schedule is subject to change. A news release will be issued announcing any changes or clarifications.
