ALPENA -- The League of Women Voters of Northeast Michigan (LWVNEMI) invites the community to participate in “Unite & Rise for Voting Rights,” a nationwide Day of Action on Aug. 8 with a special livestream screening of the documentary Three Marches, Two Sisters, One Bridge.
The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at Art in the Loft.
Produced by League of Women Voters of Michigan Board Member Charles Thomas Jr., the documentary tells the story of his aunts, who, as teenagers, marched in Selma during the Civil Rights Movement. Their firsthand experiences offer a personal perspective on the fight for voting rights and equal justice.
Following the livestream, attendees will have the opportunity to hear directly from the two sisters during a live panel discussion.
This event is part of the nationwide Unite & Rise for Voting Rights Day of Action, bringing communities together to reflect on the history of the voting rights movement while encouraging continued civic engagement and participation. The event is open to the public.
