Thunder Bay Community Health Service names next CEO
Doug Kreis
ALPENA — The Thunder Bay Community Health Service (TBCHS) Board of Directors has appointed Douglas Kreis as the organization’s next Chief Executive Officer (CEO), according to a TBCHS press release on Wednesday. This selection marks the end of a four-month selection period following the planned retirement of current CEO, Richard Bates, in 2026.
Kreis has served as TBCHS Chief Financial Officer for the past three years, working on the organization’s strategic initiatives and financial position, according to TBCHS. He brings more than 25 years of healthcare leadership experience, beginning his career in radiation therapy and advancing to senior leadership roles, including System Vice President of Service Lines at MyMichigan Health, prior to joining TBCHS as an executive leader.
TBCHS stated that Kreis is recognized for his commitment to leadership development, executive mentorship, and coaching.
“Doug brings a powerful combination of strategic vision and operational insight that will guide Thunder Bay into the future,” Dr. Bates said in the release. “He approaches every decision with patients and employees in mind and is deeply committed to our mission of caring for the people of the communities we serve.”
“I am excited for the opportunity to work with Mr. Kreis in this new capacity,” Board Chair Ben Bolser added. “He is a leader of outstanding character with exceptional credentials, and I am confident he will serve Thunder Bay with excellence.”
Kreis will work closely with Dr. Bates over the coming months, the release stated. Following the transition, Dr. Bates will continue his service to TBCHS and the region by returning to clinical practice part-time as an OB/GYN, supporting Northeast Michigan’s maternity deserts.
