Hoitenga hopes to remove state income tax on overtime

Sen. Michelle Hoitenga

ALPENA — On the heels of proposing a bill that would do away with state property taxes for homeowners 70 years old and older, state Sen. Michele Hoitenga, R-Manton, wants her colleagues in the state Senate to pass her bill that would remove state income tax on overtime.

In March, Hoitenga introduced Senate Bill 125 to wipe away state taxes on overtime, and the bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection for further consideration.

Now, Hoitenga wants action taken on it.

The proposal mimics President Donald Trump’s campaign promise, which became a step closer to reality after the U.S. House of Representatives passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

That bill is now up for consideration in the U.S. Senate.

In an email, Hoitenga said she urged her peers in the Senate to follow her lead in helping increase the amount of money in hardworking Michigan workers’ wallets.

“President Trump is leading the way to bring America into an economic golden age with his ‘Big, Beautiful Bill’ that would, among other important provisions, end taxes on overtime,” Hoitenga said. “Now is the time for Michigan lawmakers to follow the example of his economic agenda and bring an end to taxes on overtime in our state once and for all. My bill to end state income tax on overtime earnings would bring much-needed relief to the forgotten middle-class families of northern Michigan who struggle to make ends meet and are overtaxed because of Lansing Democrats.”

Also in March, Hoitenga introduced Senate Bill 292, which would end state-imposed property taxes for anyone over the age of 70. If it becomes law, it would operate like the current law that allows veterans to be exempt from the state’s property tax. That proposed bill has been referred to the Senate Committee on Finance, Insurance, and Consumer Protection for further consideration.

It is not known when or if the two bills will be sent to the Senate floor for a vote.
