ALPENA — The Alpena Community College Lumberjacks girls softball team is headed to the playoffs after a season built on hard work, strong leadership, and standout performances across the board.
Head coach Drew Ornelas reflected on the team’s journey, saying, “It’s been a fun journey to the playoffs. We knew we would be competitive this year, and with such a positive and hardworking team, we believed we could reach the postseason.”
One of the Lumberjacks’ biggest strengths has been their hitting. As a team, ACC boasts a .337 batting average, with several players exceeding that mark.
Fielding has also been a point of pride for the team, as they have kept errors to a minimum throughout the season.
Several players have stepped up in major ways.

Taylor Krentz has anchored the team’s pitching, consistently keeping the Lumberjacks competitive. Kenna Tippman has been a steady force at shortstop, leading the infield and batting cleanup, where her ability to bring runners home has made a significant impact.
In the outfield, Alaina Neubecker, Faith Cousins, and Dakota Rachow have made their presence felt, covering ground and making crucial catches.
“Dakota’s ability to cover everywhere has been a real plus for us,” Ornelas noted.
At the corners, ACC has seen two of its biggest standouts. First baseman Kirsten Neubecker has put together a season to remember, batting .469 with 11 home runs, a grand slam, and 43 RBIs.
“Kirsten is one of the best hitters in the state and the country,” said Ornelas.

On the other side of the diamond, third baseman Emilee Modrejeski has been a lockdown defender while batting a .505, one of the top averages in the state.
Ornelas emphasized that the team’s success has been a collective effort, crediting every player for their contributions. With 13 freshmen on the roster, this playoff run isn’t just about the present — it’s laying the foundation for even bigger goals ahead.
“With a good run in the playoffs, this young team could set itself up for a national title next year, which I believe is within reach,” Ornelas said.
As the Lumberjacks prepare for the postseason, they carry with them not only the momentum of a strong season but the belief that their best softball is still ahead.
ACC will be playing in Marysville starting May 8.
