City reminds motorists to be mindful of workers
In a recent City of Alpena press release, the city reminded motorists to be mindful of Department of Public Works (DPW) crews, utility workers, and construction contractors as they are working. As the 2025 construction season approaches, it is more important than ever to be aware of crews working alongside streets.
The city asks motorists to slow down, follow work zone signage, and avoid areas where crews are working.
According to the press release, despite flashing lights, safety vests, and vehicles blocking the flow of traffic, motorists are still driving between the vehicles and the curb, thus endangering workers.
The press release states that work zones are necessary to keep both crews and motorists safe. Across Michigan, last year, there were 6,097 work zone crashes, 1,065 work zone injuries, and 16 fatalities (including three workers), according to the press release.
The city asks motorists to follow this year’s National Work Zone Awareness campaign of “Respect the zone so we all get home.”
