ALPENA — On Feb. 22, SkellaFit Personal Training Studio and Zen 24 Hour Fitness raised the bar and big funds for local non-profit organization Friends Together during their first annual Big Hearts Big Muscles Powerlifting Meet.
The non-sanctioned, friendly competition offered multiple ways for community members to get involved, raising $2,472.88 for Friends Together.
“We had to get creative because we know Powerlifting is such a niche sport and not everyone feels comfortable competing, but we also know there are many folks in the community who want to support Friends Together because of the powerful work they do.” said SkellaFit Owner and event organizer Cristi Johnson.
“It was amazing to see competitors display their strength to help support an organization that helps people in times of weakness. We love our community, but some services for people affected by cancer are limited here.” said sponsor TJ Hoes of State Farm. “Money raised for Friends Together helps support people emotionally and financially by providing gas cards, transportation, and lodging to the out of town appointments for the care they need.”
In total over 20,945 lbs was successfully lifted by 16 competitors from Northeast Michigan.

“This meet not only met my expectations but to see everyone come together for a good cause and cheer each other on was an awesome experience,” said Zane Kipfmiller, owner of Zen 24 Hour Fitness.
“I knew we had strong Powerlifters here in Alpena, but after this event we are much stronger as a Powerlifting community,” added Johnson.
Skellafit Powerlifting will be competing in the upcoming APF/AAPF Michigan State Powerlifting Competition on March 8 in Royal Oak.
