Local teachers honored for place-based efforts

In a recent press release from the Northeast Michigan Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative, three teachers from Northeast Michigan, two of which are from local school districts, were honored for their place-based stewardship efforts.

Jenny Schroeder from Alcona Community Schools received a special award for advocacy in science education from the Michigan Science Teacher Association.

Stephanie Dege from Posen Consolidated Schools won the 2025 Dan Wolz Clean Water Education Grant and the Education Excellence Award from the School Employers Trust School Employers Group Foundation in partnership with the Michigan Association of School Boards.

Place-based stewardship education is an approach to learning that connects students to their local environment and community and encourages active participation in the conservation and care of natural and cultural resources, fostering a sense of responsibility and connection to the local area.
