PREP ROUNDUP: Alcona girls, boys top W-P
The Alcona High School girls basketball team defeat Whittemore Prescott, 44-30, on Thursday.
Leading Alcona was Elliyana Grimshaw with 16 points and Gracyn Tracy with 11 points. Claire Somers contributed nine points, Piper Whitefield and Joanna Steiner added three, and Rilee Tracy rounded out the night with two points.
ALCONA BOYS WIN 77-17
The Alcona boys basketball team also defeated Whittemore Prescott on Thursday, 77-17.
Leading the Tigers was Garrett Somers with 12 points and Ricky Schott, Ethan Cruz DeVaughn, and Gavin Dellar with 11 points each. Evan Borsvold added eight points, Cole Upper and Vinny Mahalak each had seven, Edju Hechlik had six, and Danny June added four points.
“It was a night where everything was going in offensively,” coach Alex Cole said. “All 9 guys scored, with 4 in double figures. But I’m most proud of our effort on the defensive end. A lot of our offense started with stops on the defensive end. We mixed it up with a few different looks and everyone focused on their rotations.”
ALPENA SWIM WINS, LOSES
The Alpena High School boys swim team defeated Standish Sterling, 114-58, but lost to John Glenn, 110-69, on Thursday.
“During the triple dual meet Alpena continued to improve as a team with an outstanding effort and focus on the details such as entries off the block, streamlines and finishes,” coach Jennifer Johnson said.
Alex Winfield led the team with points and beat his seed times in the 50-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Butterfly. In the 200-yard IM and 100-yard Butterfly, Logan Mills swam his personal best. Emmet DeRosia swam his personal best in the 100-yard Backstroke and 50-yard Freestyle. Landon Gagnon earned his personal best in the 50-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Freestyle. Other mentions go to the following earning their personal best times; Joshua Short in the 100-yard Backstroke and Kaleb Werth in the 200-yard IM.
