Alpena High School’s wrestling team traveled down to Birch Run on Saturday for their first large team tournament of the season. The Wildcats finished the day in sixth place out of 12 teams. Starting out strong in pool play Alpena dropped their first dual against Caro, 16-64, before winning duals against Brandon, 42-41, and Bath, 41-39, to place second in pool play. In the final round-robin duals for fourth through sixth place, Alpena lost a tight match-up against Alma, 40-41, and Durand, 32-48.
Leading the way individually for the Wildcats on the day were Matthew Kowalski (138/144) with four wins and Haley Stenz (113/120), Matthew Spencer (144/150), and Lyrik Ricketts (175/190) with three wins each.
Next up for Alpena wrestling is a school assembly dual at Whittemore Prescott on Wednesday 1 p.m.
