Alpena boys basketball team preps for new era
ALPENA –The Alpena High School Wildcats varsity boys basketball team is gearing up for an exciting season under the leadership of new head coach Evan Neff.
With a mix of young talent and seasoned players, the team is focused on building a solid foundation and embracing a renewed energy on and off the court.
“The main thing that excites me about this team is the great young men in our program and the energy and effort they bring every day,” Neff said. “We have decent size and some real nice shooters. We are young this year, so gaining experience and learning to adjust to our new roles will be crucial.”
Among the returning players, Connor Cameron stands out as a key contributor.
“Connor is our leading scorer returning this year,” Neff said. “He’s made great leaps in his all-around game, developed physically, and, with his great length, he’s also one of our best defenders.”
The Wildcats will also rely on senior Oliver Duthler and sophomore Eddie Prue to help anchor the team.
“Oliver is a big body down low who has improved his footwork and touch,” Neff explained. “He’s a great screener. Eddie has a nice all-around game. He’s strong, skilled around the basket, and can step out and hit jump shots. What I like most about him is the passion and intensity he plays with.”
Neff’s focus extends beyond individual performances. He emphasized the importance of creating a culture of discipline and teamwork, blending modern basketball concepts with old-school fundamentals.
“The X’s and O’s don’t matter as much as setting a strong foundation for how we want our program to look and act,” the coach noted.
Setting the tone for the future of Alpena basketball, Neff has highlighted several key teaching points for the season.
“We want guys who are going to show up and do their job every single day,” he said. “The energy and intensity of our practices have been noteworthy. The main teaching points have been being a great teammate, competing in everything we do, being a great listener, and bringing energy throughout the highs and lows of the season.”
With a focus on defensive rotations, offensive fundamentals, and fostering a competitive mindset, the Wildcats are looking to make strides this season.
“If we work on our defensive rotations and some basic offensive concepts, we will be in good shape,” Neff said.
As the team prepares to take the court, the blend of youthful enthusiasm and a commitment to fundamentals has set the stage for a promising season ahead.
The boys travel to Escanaba for the first game of the season on Monday.
