LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Upper, Boyat set season, personal records

Alcona High School's cross-country team competed at regionals Saturday in East Jordan.

Cole Upper set a season record with an impressive time of 17:22.16, while Darren Boyat achieved a personal best of 18:00.3.

Upper finished 14th and Boyat placed 18th out of 74 runners.

Upper will advance to the state competition on Saturday at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn.

ALCONA FALLS TO DECKERVILLE

Alcona High School's football team lost a tough game, 50-42, at Deckerville on Friday.

Alcona's offense was led by Brandon Fogle, with 168 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Garrett Somers added 108 yards and a TD.

The leading receiver was Karsen Gonyea, with 80 yards and a TD, followed by Evan Borsvold, with three catches for 38 yards.

The defense was led by seniors Evan Borsvold, with 14 tackles, and Ricky Schott, with 12 tackles.

ACC CROSS-COUNTRY PEAKS AT REGIONAL

The Alpena Community College cross-country team set its sights all season on peaking at the regional meet.

On Friday, the team's hard work paid off as the Lumberjacks finished eighth out of 22 teams at the competitive National Junior College Athletic Association Regional meet held at St. Clair Community College.

"Our focus this season was to peak at regionals, and that is exactly what we did," said ACC Coach Mark Jacobs. "Absolutely amazing group of young men. A group of student-athletes that both the community and the college should be proud of."

The Lumberjacks were led by Ryan Allen (Reed City) who continued to lead the way for ACC with a time of 27:22 on the difficult course. That time moves Allen to the fourth-fastest runner in ACC history.

Behind Ryan Allen was Chip Allen (Alpena) 29:20, Ty Kailing (Reed City) 29:40, Dante Gray (Manistee) 31:02, Ben Purat (Novi) 32:38, Carter Upper (32:41), Calvin Hibbler (33:37), and Forrest Hissong (Ludington) 38:23.

"I could not be prouder of a group of guys as I am of this group," Jacobs said. "They showed up day and day, put in the work and today it paid off. This was a great way to end both our season and end my coaching career. My heart is full."
