Alpena cross country team competes in Northern Michigan Meet of Champions
CADILLAC — The Alpena Wildcats cross country team traveled for the Northern Michigan Meet of Champions and competed in a 5,000-meter varsity race on Saturday.
In a field with 32 high school teams registered, the boys placed third and the women 10th.
The Alpena girls team finished in 10th place overall, scoring 281 points.
Senior Amelia Roznowski led the team, crossing the finish line with a time of 19:53.16, placing her in 16th overall. Senior Elizabeth Barnhill followed in 37th place with a time of 21:07.18, while junior Izzy Szymanski rounded out the top three for Alpena, finishing in 55th with a time of 21:43.51.
The team also had personal records set by several athletes, including Abbi Ruczynski, who finished 136th with a personal best of 24:31.23, and Claire Mitchell, who finished 166th with a PR of 26:30.19.
The Wildcats demonstrated improvement, with several runners achieving faster times and contributing to the overall team score.
On the boys side, Alpena finished with a score of 110 points, placing them in a tie for second overall with Gladwin.
Freshman Alexander Allen led the team with a new personal best time of 16:01.25.
Seniors Hayden Bacchus and Kenan Knight finished just milliseconds apart, clocking in at 17:05.04 (PR) and 17:05.15, respectively.
Freshman Logan Szumila and junior Braeden Mathis also finished strongly, with Mathis achieving a new personal best of 17:40.94.
The team saw several personal records set during the race, including those by Milo Dahleen and Joel Kaiser, who finished in times of 19:26.47 and 19:43.74, respectively.
The Wildcats will be competing in the MHSAA Division 1 Region 2 championship race at Shepherd High School on Friday. The men’s race starts at 3:30 p.m. The gun goes off for the girls at 4:30 p.m.
