Summer 2024 warmer, wetter than typical in Alpena

ALPENA — The Alpena area saw its eighth-warmest and eighth-wettest summer this year, according to the National Weather Service office in Gaylord.

This summer’s average temperature was 67.7 degrees in the Alpena area, according to the Weather Service. That tied for the eighth-warmest average summer temp in the area and was 1.7 degrees warmer than typical.

This summer’s hottest Alpena day happened June 19, when the thermometer climbed to a scorching 96 degrees. The Weather Service recorded Alpena’s coolest temp of the summer just a week before that, when overnight lows dropped to 41 degrees on June 11.

Throughout the summer, 13.01 inches of rain fell on Alpena, 3.98 inches more than typical, coming in as the region’s eighth-wettest summer. This summer’s wettest day in Alpena happened June 23, when 1.22 inches of rain soaked the region.

Some severe weather clobbered northern Michigan this summer, including two confirmed tornadoes: one that struck Crawford County on June 5 and another that tore up 10 miles of Gladwin County on June 22.

August, meanwhile, was warmer and dryer than typical in the Alpena area, though the month broke no records.

The average temperature for the month came in at 68.1 degrees in Alpena, according to the Weather Service, 1.5 degrees warmer than usual.

The month’s warmest temp was set on Aug. 27, when the mercury clocked in at 91 degrees.

The month’s coolest temp was set Aug. 20, when the nighttime temp dropped to 46 degrees.

The area’s hottest-ever August day happened Aug. 2, 1988, when the temperature hit a scorching 102 degrees. The Weather Service recorded the area’s coldest-ever August day on Aug. 30, 1934, when frost set in as the overnight temperature dropped to 29 degrees.

The Weather Service’s records for the Alpena area go back to October 1916.

Last month, the Alpena area saw 1.75 inches of rain, down 1.34 inches from normal, the Weather Service said.

Almost all of that rain fell on Aug. 17, when a major storm dumped 1.02 inches of rain.

The most rain ever recorded on a single August day in the Alpena area fell on Aug. 31, 1941, when a whopping 2.96 inches of rain soaked the region.

Labor Day on Monday, meanwhile, came in a bit cooler than typical but typically dry.

The Weather Service says the average high for an Alpena Labor Day is 75 degrees, while Monday’s temps struggled to reach the lower 70s. The typical low temp for an Alpena Labor Day is 51 degrees, while Monday’s overnight lows were forecast for the upper-40s. The average Alpena Labor Day rainfall is 0.11 inches, while no rain was forecast for Monday.

The hottest-ever Alpena Labor Day happened in 1929, when holiday revelers sweat under 94-degree temps. The coolest-ever Alpena Labor Day happened in 2011, when temps only reached 56 degrees. The wettest Alpena Labor Day happened in 2014, when 1.33 inches of rain fell on the holiday.

Summer temps are expected to continue in Alpena for most of the week, with highs forecast in the upper 70s most of the week and 80 degrees on Thursday.

But overnight showers Thursday night will bring fall-like temperatures to the region, with Friday’s high forecast for only 67 degrees and Saturday not expected to hit 60 degrees.
