PREP ROUNDUP: Wildcats runners place 5th, 7th

The Alpena High School cross country team raced at Shepherd High School on Saturday afternoon and the boys placed fifth out of 21 teams and the girls took seventh out of 20 teams.

The top runner for the varsity girls was Amelia Roznowski, who placed 11th and posted a career best 20:46 on the 5-kilometer course. Elizabeth Barnhill was next in at 21:57, Izzy Szymanski was at 23:02, Marian Renard ran 24:15, Lila Scott 24:35, Ava Karsten 25:54, and Maddie Taylor 30:35.

In the varsity men’s race, where the Wildcats ran a bit short-handed because of some missing teammates, the squad was led by a trio of freshmen.

Xander Allen’s seventh-place 16:45 was followed by Logan Szumila in 17:20 and Brenden Werth at 17:51. Senior Thurston Imhoff’s 18:00, sophomore Logan Ruczynski’s 18:44, and sophomore Milo Dahleen’s 19:44 all came in as career bests, while Austin Reinhardt was the fifth man in at 18:30.

The Wildcats run next at Delta College on Saturday for the Saginaw Heritage Invitational.

ALCONA FOOTBALL BEATS MIO

The Alcona High School football team topped Mio on Friday night, 40-28.

Alcona found the endzone early when Garrett Somers hooked up with Karsen Gonyea for a seven-yard touchdown and Gavin Dellar hauled in the two-point conversion.

Alcona scored again when Brandon Fogle rushed in from 11 yards out, making the score 14-6 in favor of Alcona.

Gonyea took a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown, but Alcona failed to make the conversion.

Fogle then scored again from 11 yards out, making the score 28-20 at half.

The next score came from Fogle, making it a hat trick from six yards out, and the two-point conversion was good from Somers to Evan Borsvold.

Fogle capped the game off with a four-yard touchdown run.

The defense was led by the play of Ricky Schott, who had two interceptions and eight tackles, while Borsvold added eight tackles.

The Tigers will be in action this week at Charlton Heston.

ALCONA’S BOYAT RUNS 19:27

Alcona High School runner Darren Boyat competed in the Leroy Maxie Invitational on Saturday morning, completing three miles in a time of 19:27.

The team’s next meet happens Tuesday at Charlton Heston.
