A 29-year old Alpena man was arrested for breaking into an Alpena residence and assaulting his ex-girlfriend, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police.

He is charged with home invasion, domestic violence, and assault by strangulation. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison.

The alleged crime happened on Aug. 31. When officers arrived at the scene, they could hear the assault from outside the home. Police forced their way into the residence and arrested the man.

After his arraignment, the man posted bond and was released.
