Alpena boys’ tennis team takes several wins in singles, doubles to overpower Gaylord
ALPENA — The Alpena Wildcats tennis team pulled off a solid 5-3 win in their match against Gaylord on Tuesday, showcasing strong performances across singles and doubles flights. The Wildcats demonstrated focus and resilience with wins from critical players and close contests across the board.
Landen Gagnon dominated his opponent at one singles, securing a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory. His brother, Dillan Gagnon, also performed at three singles, winning 6-2, 6-3. Both players were praised for staying calm under pressure and keeping the ball in play.
“Landen and Dillan worked hard to keep as many balls in play as possible,” said head coach Charlie Giordano. “They are calm under pressure, and it shows in their results.”
Nathan Pokorzynski battled at two singles but ultimately fell in a tight match, 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles action, Hunter Orr and Austin Derosia delivered a dominant performance, winning 6-1, 6-0. Meanwhile, Zach Cloft and Evan McDonald secured another essential victory at one double, winning 6-3, 6-3 to help seal the team win.
Giordano emphasized the importance of consistency and strategy across all flights.
“Each flight needs different focus,” Giordano said. “At the higher flights, it’s more about strategy, while the lower flights often focus on strokes and form. We will continue working on consistency and court coverage.”
Despite some losses, including a close three-doubles match in which Maddox Chabot and Jack Caplis were defeated in a nail-biting 7-5, 0-6, 10-8 contest, the Wildcats remained positive. Giordano credited the team’s hard work and determination for the overall win.
“The team played great,” Giordano said. “All players worked hard and stayed focused on keeping the ball in play. There were a lot of good points played today.”
As the season progresses, Giordano plans to continue pairing up the teams in practice and working on building confidence in both strokes and strategy. With this win under their belts, the Wildcats are looking forward to their next challenge, hoping to build on their momentum and improve their consistency on the court.
Alpena will host Traverse City Central at 4 p.m. on Thursday.
