PREP ROUNDUP: Wildcats soccer team ties
The Alpena High School boys varsity soccer team tied 2-2 with Lake Fenton on Thursday in Fenton.
The Wildcats record stands at 2-0-1.
“The team as a whole got off to a sluggish start,” coach Gregg Supiran said in a statement. “They struggled to possess the ball and defend. Lake Fenton got an early goal and followed up with a second not too long afterwards. The rest of the half was scoreless.
“The team slowly began to get things together and came out the second half with a lot more possession and improved defending,” Supiran added.
Keller skiba scored a goal off a pass from Jack Supiran with approximately 10 minutes left and, with just a few minutes left in the game, Skiba tallied another goal from an Owen Kaiser assist.
ALPENA CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS TAKE SECOND
The Alpena High School cross country teams traveled to Northern Michigan University on Friday to take part in the Wildcat Invitational in Marquette.
Both the boys and girls teams from Alpena placed second out of the 15 teams in attendance. Host team Marquette took top honors in both races, while Gladstone was third in the men’s race and the Munising girls took third in their contest.
Top male runner for the Wildcats was freshman Xander Allen with a seventh-place finish and a time of 16:41. Senior Kenan Knight was the second man in for the Cats in 11th, freshman Logan Szumila finished 12th overall, freshman Brendan Werth came in 21st, and senior Austin Reinhardt in 22nd rounded out the scoring.
For the girls, seniors Amelia Roznowski came in 11th overall and Elizabeth Barnhill came in 12th, the top Wildcat women in Friday’s race. They were joined in the team’s top five by sophomore Marian Renard in 22nd, freshman Lila Scott 37th, and sophomore Ava Karsten in 42nd.
The Wildcats will be staying close to home for their next competition when they travel to Ogemaw Heights High School on Thursday to take part in the Duane Rau Memorial Invitational.
ALCONA SOCCER TEAM WINS 5-1
The Alcona High Schools boys varsity soccer team traveled to Crossroads Charter Academy in Big Rapids on Thursday and came away with a 5-1 victory.
Senior captain Vincent Nardi started the scoring with a long-range goal from midfield. He was followed by freshman Caiden Glick, who scored an unassisted goal, followed by junior Colin McKenna, who scored two more goals for the Tigers (assisted by Vincent Nardi and Caiden Glick), putting Alcona up 4-1 at halftime.
Senior captain Haley Glick scored the final goal of the contest, assisted by McKenna.
Junior keeper Cole Upper had 10 saves in goal.
