The Alpena High School Wildcat cross country team showed up big time on Thursday as the boys brought home the championship trophy from the Dwayne Rau Invitational and the girls raced well enough to earn silver.

A last-minute change in venue deprived the Cats from racing on one of their favorite courses. But on a super fast course at the Ogemaw County Fairgrounds, the boys’ team executed their race plan and defeated a strong Gladwin team that is currently ranked 10th among all teams in the state of Michigan.

The top finisher for the Wildcats was freshman Xander Allen in second place with a time of 15:39.

The next four in and scoring for the Cats were senior Kenan Knight in fifth, freshman Logan Szumila in sixth, freshman Brendan Werth in ninth, and senior Austin Reinhardt in 11th.

The girls’ team responded brilliantly as well. Running short-handed with only six on the line, taking a second-place finish.
