ALPENA — The Alpena Wildcats kicked off their soccer season with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Bay City Western Warriors on Friday, holding off a late-game surge to take their first win.

The match started on a high note for the Wildcats with Kaleb Werth scoring a free kick. Werth’s strike found the back of the net, giving Alpena an early 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats continued to apply pressure, and it wasn’t long before Keller Skiba doubled their advantage. Skiba directed a header past Bay City’s goalkeeper, securing a 2-0 lead for Alpena.

By halftime, Alpena held a comfortable 2-0 lead, with their defense standing strong against Bay City’s attempts to break through.

As the second half began, the Wildcats showed no signs of slowing down.

Jack Supiran added to Alpena’s tally, scoring a well-placed goal that pushed the lead 3-0. Supiran’s goal appeared to seal the game for the Wildcats, but Bay City Western had other plans.

The Warriors mounted a determined comeback led by Blake Wrzesinski. Wrzenski first tested Alpena’s goalkeeper, Drake Wheelock, with a powerful shot that was deflected over the net.

However, Wrzesinski was undeterred and found the net twice in quick succession. With 20 minutes remaining, he scored Bay City’s first goal, reducing the deficit to 3-1. Minutes later, Wrzensinski struck again, bringing the Warriors within one goal of tying the game.

Despite Bay City’s late push, Alpena’s defense held form in the final minutes, preserving their lead and securing a 3-2 victory.

The Wildcats will look to build on this momentum in their next game, scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. Fans can anticipate another exciting match as Alpena continues its season.
