MACKINAC ISLAND — Emergency crews pulled five people and one dog from the waters near Mackinac Island after their boat capsized on Friday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a news release.

Mackinac County Dispatch at about 2 p.m. Friday alerted the Coast Guard of a capsized vessel that sent multiple people, including children, into the water about 200 years off the Grand Hotel, the Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard launched a 29-foot response boat out of Station St. Ignace. Mackinac Marine Rescue and the Wyandot, a Shepler’s Ferry vessel, also responded.

All five people were safely recovered from the water within 20 minutes of the original call from dispatch, the Coast Guard said.

“Thanks to our close coordination with local and commercial partners, we were able to accomplish a quick and safe rescue of all persons involved,” Lt. Alex Waide, Sector Northern Great Lakes search and rescue coordinator, said in a statement. “This is also a great reminder of how important it is to wear life jackets; in this situation, all five of the distressed boaters were wearing them which helped buy first responders the few minutes needed to get to them in time.”
