Alpena Fire Department to conduct flow testing on fire hydrants

The Alpena Fire Department will be conducting flow testing on fire hydrants within the fire response area, which began Thursday and will continue until completed, according to a press release by Fire Chief Rob Edmonds. This is anticipated to take approximately five weeks to complete all 500+ hydrants.

The purpose of the testing is to determine the maximum water flow capacity for each hydrant within the city’s water system. Crews are also assessing the hydrants for proper operation, identifying any repairs needed, and plotting the locations of each hydrant.

If you notice crews in your area flowing water from the hydrants, you may experience discoloration or a rusty color in your residential water. You should refrain from drinking, doing laundry, washing dishes, or food preparation until water runs clear, according to the release.
