LOCAL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Alcona softball wins 2 games

On Thursday, Alcona High School’s softball team won their last two regular-season games. The wins against Tawas brought their regular season record to 20-6.

Game one wrapped up 14-3 in five innings.

Miah Schopfer was on the mound, striking out four, walking none, and giving up six hits.

Offensively, Sage Gauthier went three for four hitting two singles and a triple. Addison Beatty, Hannah Renchenski, and Baylee Goddard each had two singles. Olivie Borchardt added a double. Riley Tracy, Gracyn Tracy, and Schopfer each had one single. Jena Wambold had a single and double.

In game two, Alcona won 15-5.

Schopfer was on the mound again, walking one and gave up nine hits.

Offensively, Gauthier had a single and a double. Beatty had a triple. Schopfer had four singles. Goddard, Gracy Tracy, and Hannah Renchenski had two singles. Wambold had two doubles and a single.

Alcona coach Chelsea Neuenfeldt said, “Our coaching staff is very proud of how they played. They communicated well, were backing each other up, and had two great games. The defense was there to back up our pitching and their bats were on fire (Thursday). They ran the bases well and capitalized on opportunities. This is a great way to end regular season play and head into the postseason.”

AHS BASEBALL PLAYS

TRAVERSE CITY ST. FRANCIS

Also on Thursday, the Alpena High School baseball team played Traverse City St. Francis.

In game one, the Wildcats won 8-3.

Jake Zann earned the win, striking out seven and walking none.

Game two saw a Wildcat loss with a final score of 4-2.

AHS saw difficulties capitalizing with runners in scoring positions.

There were ten hits collected on the day with Jase Kollen, Owen Kaiser, and Gabe Glawe each collecting multiple hits.

ALPENA SOFTBALL WINS ONE, LOSES ONE

The Alpena High School softball team played Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday at Central Michigan University.

Alpena coach Paul Marwede said, “Playing at this venue was exciting for both teams and the fans. What a great experience for everyone involved!”

In game one, the Wildcats came out on top, 10-2.

Eliana Kelley and Lilly Rospierski paced the Wildcat offense with three hits each as Alpena collected 14 hits. Sydney Hitzelberger and Izzy Edmonds added a home run. Paige Samp pitched a complete game allowing five hits and striking out 11.

Game two saw Alpena fall 13-11 against Mr. Pleasant.

Alpena was led at the plate by Laura Poli, Maddie Spomer, and Grace Pratt who each had two hits a piece.

“What a great opportunity for our team to play at Central Michigan Univerisity,” Marwede said. ” Every player on the team had a hit on the day.”

AHS SOFTBALL PLAYS THREE GAMES ON SATURDAY

On Saturday at the Bay City Central Tournament, Alpena played Northville, Clio, and Bay City Central.

In game one, Alpena lost to Northville 9-4. While trailing 2-0 after four innings, Alpena rallied to take a 4-2 lead, largely in part to a three-run home run off the bat of Paige Samp.

Northville answered back with a big sixth inning to take the 9-4 win. Samp and Emilee Modrezejewski led the team with two hits each.

Game two saw the Wildcats come out on top against Clio, with a final of 11-5.

Alpena Used a six-run first inning, including a two-run home run from Ava Rospierski to cruise to 11-5. Izzy Edmonds collected three hits and Modrezejewski contributed four hits out of the 11 hits for the Wildcats. Lilly Rospierski picked up the win for Alpena.

In game three, AHS took another win, this time against Bay City Central. AHS slipped by with a 7-6 final score.

Edmonds paced the team with three hits as Alpena pounded out 12 hits in the contest. Samp earned the win on the mound.

Northville, Clio, and Alpena all went 2-1 on the day, with Northville taking the championship trophy based on runs allowed.
