Fireworks get green light for Alpena County Fair

ALPENA — The Alpena Fair Board will be able to host its fireworks show planned to celebrate the fair’s 150th anniversary this year.

On Monday, the Alpena Municipal Council voted to allow the fair board to have the fireworks display, as long as it provides city officials proof that the city is included in the insurance policy needed for the show, has arranged traffic control with police, and has a clean-up plan for the nearby area.

Last month, the Fair Board approached the Alpena County Board of Commissioners seeking support to have the fireworks on the last night of the fair.

The commissioners signed off on the fireworks late last month and the city did the same. The Fair Board needed the council’s approval for a permit for the fireworks because, although the county owns the fairgrounds, it is located in Alpena.

The plan for fireworks at the fairgrounds, where the county’s animal control shelter is located, and where there are many residential areas nearby, sparked concerns from some residents in Alpena about the impact the fireworks would have on pets and the wildlife in the surrounding area.

The Fair Board quickly issued a letter to the public explaining what its plans are to limit the impact on the animals and natural resources around the fairgrounds.

In its letter, the Fair Board said all of the livestock at the fair would be moved out of the fairgrounds early to accommodate them and that biodegradable fireworks would be used to limit the impact on the environment.

Fair Board President Courtney Krentz said the list of items that the council asked to be taken care of has already been done, and a copy of the insurance policy was forwarded to city government.

She said there may have been some slight hurdles in getting the needed approvals, but now, there is nothing but excitement for the 150th celebration.

“We’ve already checked off all of the boxes we needed to and once we get the permit in hand, we should be good to go,” Krentz said. “There were some concerns originally, but I think they have been addressed and some of the controversy has diminished. Right now, I think almost everyone is excited and it will be an event the entire community can enjoy.”

The fireworks contractor has already toured the fairgrounds and selected a spot where the fireworks could be launched. According to Krentz, they may be launched from the northeast section of the fairgrounds near the river.

The Alpena County Fair will be held from August 11-17.
