ALPENA — Reaching the end of the collegiate season, the Alpena Community College softball team (3-26, 1-19 MCCAA) took on the most formidable team in the conference on Saturday.

The Lumberjacks faced Muskegon Community College in a tripleheader and lost all three games by scores of 15-5, 14-4, and 11-6.

Although ACC was outmatched, the Jayhawks have only dropped one game all season, leading to an impeccable 17-1 record.

Muskegon decided each game by its ability to blast the ball offensively while shutting down the Lumberjacks’ bats.

Game one began on Saturday due to a rainout in Friday’s games, leading to an early start time for the match.

The early start never faltered the Jayhawks as they jumped out to a 1-0 lead early.

In the bottom of the second, Muskegon added one more to its total to go up 2-0.

Finally, ACC discovered a spark offensively, tying up the game at 2-2 after making solid contact off Brooklyn Galdeen, Muskegon’s pitcher.

Tied 2-2, all things seemed well, until the Lumberjacks imploded in the third inning.

ACC allowed nine runs, within one frame, and suddenly, winning the game was completely out of reach.

The game remained 11-2 until the fifth inning when the Jayhawks extended the lead by four runs into the mercy-rule territory.

Alpena fought back for three runs in the bottom of the inning, but it was too little too late, as the game was called for a 15-5 mercy.

Game two ended in a similar ten-run differential, but this game lasted all seven innings.

An early 4-0 lead for Muskegon in the top of the first inning put ACC in a colossal deficit it would never escape.

Although the Lumberjacks battled the score back to 3-4, the final two innings killed any chance at a comeback.

Ten runs were split between the sixth and seventh innings, leading Alpena right into another loss.

Lilli Goodrich received the win in game two, pitching seven innings, and allowing four runs on eight hits.

Eventually, as the Lumberjacks moved into game three, ACC kept the match within single-digit runs, narrowly falling to the Jayhawks.

Even though the final was only separated by five runs, ACC went down 6-0 early within the first two innings.

In each of the innings, the Lumberjacks gave up three runs due to a massive game from Galdeen and Andrea Romero.

Down 6-0, Alpena struggled for three runs back, taking full advantage of poor pitching by Willo Staal.

Between the fourth and fifth innings, Muskegon got back on track for a two-run and a three-run inning, leaving Alpena in the dust.

ACC earned three final runs in the bottom of the sixth, but, like before, the comeback came too late for any miracles to arise.

“This was the best team in the conference, and we knew we would have to play exceptionally to beat them,” Coach Drew Ornelas said. “It sucks to go out like this, but I’m proud of how my girls performed and battled all weekend long. Next season, we’ve got almost a brand-new group coming in with lots of recruits, so I’m excited for the future of ACC softball.”
