The Alpena Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 210 W. Lake Street just before 11 a.m. on Wednesday.

When fire crews arrived, there was smoke coming from the two-story residential structure.

The people residing in the first-floor apartment and two cats were safely evacuated out of the residence. They were sleeping and unaware the building was on fire.

The second-story apartment was vacant and unoccupied.

Crews quickly located and extinguished the source of the fire and the cause of the blaze appears to be electrical in origin, but further investigation will continue.

There were no reported injuries.

Alpena crews were assisted by the Alpena Police Department, Alpena Department of Public Works, MyMichigan Emergency Medical Services, Alpena Power Company, and DTE Energy.
