Elowski preliminary exam delayed

MIO — The Oscoda County preliminary examination for Alpena attorney Michelle Elowski has been delayed because her new defense attorney needs more time to prepare for the case after her previous lawyer withdrew from the case.

No time is set for the postponed prelim, a hearing used to determine if prosecutors have enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial.

Elowski does not have her driver’s license or passport and must wear a tether as part of her bond requirements from an arraignment on Feb. 2 in Oscoda County, but she is still allowed to drive with the use of a paper version given by the courts. During the brief hearing, Elowski’s paper license was renewed and extended to June 4.

Elowski is charged with two counts of common law fraud, one count of check fraud with non-sufficient funds of $500 or more, one count of embezzlement by a trustee of $1,000 or more but less than $20,000, and one count of embezzlement by a trustee of $50,000 or more but less than $100,000.

CORRECTION: This story has been updated to reflect that the preliminary examination in the criminal case against Alpena attorney Michelle Elowski has been postponed. The nature of the postponed hearing was incorrect in an earlier version of this story.
