ALPENA — The friends and family of Brynn Bills and Abby Hill didn’t hold back when they addressed Brad Srebnik during Srebnik’s sentencing in 88th District Court on Thursday.
During his trial in February, Srebnik was found guilty of strangling Bills and shooting and killing Hill in 2021.
Judge Alan Curtis sentenced Srebnik to life in prison with no chance of parole after hearing from the families.
Before the impact statements began, Srebnik denied he killed the two women.
Supporters of the two women made clear that he should spend the remainder of his life behind bars, with some going as far as to say they believe Srebnik deserves the same fate as Hill and Bills.
Brynn Bills’ father, Duane Bills, had Alpena County Prosecutor Cynthia Muszynski read a prepared statement for him. In his letter, he said Srebnik stripped his daughter of an opportunity to experience many special life events, including her 18th birthday. She was killed only days before she was going to reach that milestone.
“I’m sitting here writing this with thoughts going through my head wondering what my daughter’s final thoughts were and I’m sure it was terrifying,” Muszynsk said on Duane Bills’ behalf. “Your senseless act of violence robbed her of life and all of her experiences that come with it: love, marriage, failure, kids, and the list goes on. I hope what I hear about prison justice for people who prey on younger kids is true and your parents get you back the same way I did my daughter — in an urn.”
Hill’s brother, Austin Hill, explained how his sister was a kind and gentle soul who would go above and beyond to help others. He also reminded Srebnik that Abby Hill loved and treated his children as if they were her own.
“She touched the lives of all that knew her and she radiated love and kindness and touched the lives of all that knew her,” he said. “She was a mother, sister, aunt, daughter, and a friend. She had an unwavering strength, grace, and resilience about her, She cared more about other’s happiness than her own. As long as I have a conscience, you must know that forgiveness will never come.”
Bills’ cousin, Sydney Chischilly, read her statement before the court. She said that, although Srebnik will still be able to breathe air, call his children, and see his parents, Byrnn lost her ability to do those things when he killed her. She said Srebnik enjoys portraying himself as a tough guy, but, in her mind, he is the complete opposite.
“You are not a strong man, but a weak man, undeserving to be called a man at all,” she said. “The only power you ever possessed was through fear. Through fear and tyranny, you only exhibited power over those smaller and weaker than you. Such a strong and scary individual you murdered, a teenager who weighed 100 pounds or less. You are a coward to the core.”
Chischilly went on to challenge Srebnik’s courage and again referred to him as a coward because he refused to return to court to receive the jury’s verdict in person. Staff at the jail and the court tried to convince him to do so by connecting him to the courtroom via a videostream. Still, he refused to attend.
“That alone was the admission of guilt that I’ll ever need,” she said.
Another cousin and an aunt made impact statements, too.
After the sentence was handed down by Curtis, Brad Srebnik’s father, Larry Srebnik, approached The News wanting to comment on the murder case and his son’s involvement in it.
He expressed his sympathy to the Hill and Bills families but added that he still believes his son is innocent. Larry Srebnik said there were multiple plea deals made with others who were connected to the murders that clouded the case and prevented the truth from coming out.
“They paid and made deals to get a story, and that is what they got: a story,” he said. “There will be more that comes out, but the full story has to be told. My son told us that he will have open arms when he meets his maker because he didn’t do this. The people who made up these lies and stories will have to meet their maker one day, too.”
