A 40-year-old Alpena man has been charged with breaking into an Avery Street residence and arraigned in the 88th District Court on Wednesday.

He faces charges of home invasion, methamphetamine use, and malicious destruction of property.

The charges stem after an occupant of the home called 911 stating a stranger had forced their way into the residence.

The caller armed themselves with a gun and confronted the man who fled into the basement. Alpena Police arrived on the scene and located the man who was initially non-compliant with officers but was ultimately taken into custody.

Officers on scene were able to determine that the suspect was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the incident.

He was lodged in the Alpena County Jail. The suspect’s charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. He is currently being held on a $50,000 cash bond.
