Alcona loses in district final

Alcona High School’s boys’ basketball team lost to Roscommon, 51-64, on Friday.

Collin Walker had a huge night with 15 points and 12 boards. Evan Borsvold locked down the other block with 12 points and 5 boards. Jacob Renchenski had 8 points.

“The environment for the district final game in Roscommon was something every kid dreams about playing in,” Alcona coach Alex Cole said. “Trophy on the line. Packed house. Loud student sections that make the place explode after every bucket. It’s the moment that we preach about when we start training in the summer. Unfortunately, after a very hard-fought battle, we came up short.

“We knew they were going to be scrappy and tough on the defensive end. For most of the game, we controlled the tempo and took care of the basketball. Unfortunately, there were a few possessions in a row where we compounded errors and gave them the lead and momentum that we couldn’t overcome.”

Alcona rounded out the season with 18 wins and six loses. The team also won the schools first ever NSL Big Dipper title (9-1).

“I give my congratulations to those in the Roscommon program. They’ve built a tough squad over there and I wish them nothing but the best in the next round,” Cole said. “To the seven seniors that move on, I could not be more proud. They have put so much time and effort into basketball and have really helped to shape the culture of our program. They will be greatly missed and I wish them nothing but the best!”
