Area roads ripe for wrecks today

ALPENA — Snow-covered and slushy roads have led to a string of car wrecks in Northeast Michigan today, including a head-on collision on U.S.-23 North near Rogers City and numerous vehicles that have slid off the roadway.

The snow and poor road conditions are expected to continue until later today.

The two-car head-on crash on U.S.-23 near Williams Road in Presque Isle County resulted in minor injuries, Presque Isle County Undersheriff Chris Flewelling said. Flewelling and Sheriff Joe Brewbaker both responded to the crash. The highway has been cleared of the wreck and traffic is moving in both directions.

Still, Flewelling said, drivers should be careful when out and about because road conditions are still poor.

“The roads are pretty greasy and slippery right now,” he said.

Northeast Michigan remains under a Winter Weather Advisory until 4 p.m. and it is forecasted additional snow accumulations will impact the Alpena region, with snowfall rates reaching 1 to 2 inches per hour at times into the afternoon.

The National Weather Service forecasts 3-5 inches of snow in Alpena from the storm.
