ALPENA – The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team (6-15, 4-6 Northern MCCAA) kicked off a special night on Wednesday where the team hosted its annual Hoops for Hope Pink Game.

During this matchup, the Lumberjacks took on Bay College to raise as much money as possible to donate to the Friends Together charity.

Through T-shirt sales, a 50/50 drawing, a staff free throw contest, and a Minute to Win it challenge, all money raised was given to support those with cancer and their families.

Aside from charity, the ACC also played a tough game, ultimately losing to Bay College, 82-37.

“This is one of my favorite gameday atmospheres. We talked as a team about what this game really meant to us and what it represents,” ACC coach Brandon Humphrey said. “I thought our girls responded really well, especially knowing this would be a tough game.”

At the start of the game, the Lumberjacks matched up well and hung right with the Norse.

By the end of the first quarter, the team was only down five points by a score of 7-12.

While the ACC struggled offensively, so did Bay College, as neither offense could find a spark.

This remained true until the start of the second, when Bay completely pulled away, similar to the team’s previous match.

Earlier in the season, the Norse brutally defeated the Lumberjacks by 50 points, and going into halftime, ACC was down 38-12, a total of 26 points.

Led mainly by the Lumberjack’s costly turnovers and inability to find an open shot, the team’s offense was stagnant.

In addition to the slow offense, the defense quickly depleted and couldn’t manage to get a stop.

Heading out of halftime, the offense strived for more open opportunities and fewer turnovers, leading to fast-break layups.

While this approach could’ve been successful, the team was unable to perform up to expectations.

Continuous turnovers due to unrelenting pressure from the Norse forced ACC into even more complex situations.

Despite ACC scoring its most out of any quarter, the team still was outscored by six points.

Allie Urlaub and Emily Jackson led the way with four points each, but Bay still went into the final period up 58-26.

Closing out the game, the Norse still accumulated 24 points, cruising on the back of Kennedy Sproule, who scored 11.

The final ended 82-37, a tough loss to the best team in the conference.

“Getting into scoring droughts has been a problem for us all year. We talked at halftime about trying to score more consistently, but we couldn’t execute that today,” Coach Humphrey said.
