MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena calls for diversion

ALPENA -- On Tuesday, MyMichigan Medical Center Alpena called for a diversion.
The diversion by MyMichigan hospital instructed all ambulance transports, except high acuity patients, to be taken to other facilities, according to Alpena Fire Chief Rob Edmonds. The next closest facility is Tawas or Gaylord.
Diversions to another hospital are used in extreme circumstances, usually due to a high patient influx to the emergency department.
Edmonds also mentioned that diversions are utilized in rare cases, especially in rural areas such as Alpena.
Alpena City Fire Department has been working with Medical Control for options. The department has a contingency plan with off-duty personnel to be on standby in the event a transport is needed to another hospital, according to Edmonds.
