Free Throw Competition at Boys and Girls Club

ALPENA -- The Alpena Knights of Columbus Council 529 hosted their annual Free Throw Competition at the Alpena Boys and Girls Club on Sunday.

The event was largely organized by Knights of Columbus Council 529 representative Jon Benson.

According to Benson, the Free Throw Competition is an event typically held in January that is available to anyone in the Alpena area ages nine through 14. Benson states that the goal of this event is to support area youths.

"We put on the Free Throw Competition every January, and it's open to all kids, all boys and girls ages nine through 14," said Benson. "It's one of the things that Knights like to do to support area youths, and try to get them involved with the community and give them activities to do.... It doesn't cost anything for anybody to participate, it's just an opportunity for kids to come out and have some fun."

Participants in the competition could compete in one of 12 divisions based on their age and gender with there being six divisions for boys and six divisions for girls. Winners in the local divisions have the option to progress from the local level to the district competition in a competition taking place in the first weekend of February.

According to Benson, despite there being a possibility for 12 different winners, due to a slightly low turnout this year there were only 6 winners who are now eligible to move on to district in February if they so choose.

"We only had six winners," said Benson. "There's a possibility to have 12 If all age groups are represented by six winners today."
