Alpena Sports Hall of Fame names 2023 class

ALPENA — The Alpena Sports Hall of Fame Board of Directors has announced its Class of 2023.

The four members of the 2023 class will be inducted during the Hall of Fame’s annual banquet on June 1.

The four members of the Class of 2023 are:

∫ Nathan Barden (baseball and basketball) — Alpena High School Class of 1999

∫ Ashley (Hunault) Williams (track and field) — Alpena High School Class of 2007

∫ Eric Muszynski (basketball) — Alpena High School Class of 1998

∫ Tony Skiba III (hockey and soccer) — Alpena High School Class of 1992

The soon-to-be hall-of-famers were chosen after tallying the votes of the members of the Hall of Fame Voting Association. Ballots with 15 nominees were mailed to 650-plus members to make the selections. The members’ ballots were counted to determine the selections.

NATE BARDEN

A star baseball and basketball player for Alpena High School, Barden earned all-state honors in both sports and played both at Grand Valley State University from 1999 to 2003.

During his senior year at Alpena, Barden earned numerous honors, including being named to the Class A all-state third team in basketball, the baseball all-state Dream Team, and the Class A all-state baseball first team. He was also named a Detroit Free Press Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was among USA Today’s top high school baseball players, earned academic all-state honors in both sports for the second consecutive year, and was named Alpena’s 1999 Male Athlete of the Year.

Upon graduating, Barden set Alpena records for blocked shots in a season (142) and strikeouts (131). At GVSU, he was part of the baseball program’s 2003 Division II runner-up team and earned all-academic Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors in 2001-02.

Barden got invitations from both the Arizona Diamondbacks and Minnesota Twins but chose to further his education.

ERIC MUSZYNSKI

Muszynski was a three-year starting point guard and captain of back-to-back district championship teams during the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons. He earned all-state honorable mention in those two seasons and had a decorated career that included all-region, all-conference, and all-Alpena News honors, and he was also named team MVP. As a senior, he earned all-region, all-conference, and all-Alpena News honors again and also received the team’s Coaches Award.

Muszynski scored 704 points in his career and still ranks among the program’s top 20 in scoring, three-pointers in a season (44), and career three-pointers (81). He was a member of the Michigan Junior National Basketball Team in 1997 and qualified for the cross-country state finals his senior year.

Muszynski has since become a successful basketball coach at Hillman High School, with a long list of accomplishments and more than 250 wins. He was named Associated Press Class D State Coach of the Year in 2016, Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Region Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2015 (nominated nine other times), and Alpena News Coach of the Year nine times. He’s coached two regular-season undefeated teams and has led his teams to 20-win seasons eight times. Additionally, his teams have won seven North Star League championships, eight district championships, and four regional championships.

ASHLEY HUNAULT WILLIAMS

Hunault Williams was a four-year track-and-field standout at Alpena and set several school records that still stand, including the long jump (19 feet), high jump (5 feet, 5 inches), 100-meter dash (12.2 seconds), and 200 dash (25.8 seconds).

She was a four-time team MVP and Alpena’s 2007 Female Athlete of the Year, who led the Wildcats to Big North Conference championships in 2006 and 2007. Hunault Williams earned all-state honors three times and won four conference championships in the long jump and a regional title in the same event in 2007.

Hunault continued competing in track at Western Michigan University and earned all-American honors in 2008. She still holds school indoor and outdoor records in the long jump and was a six-time Mid-American Conference champion. She qualified for the 2010 NCAA Championship and was also a member of the 2010 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I All-Academic Track and Field Team.

TONY SKIBA III

As a star in both soccer and hockey, Skiba earned seven letters — including four in hockey — for the Wildcats and finished his career among the hockey program’s top 15 scorers, with 124 points. He led Alpena’s hockey team in scoring during his junior and senior seasons and earned all-state honors during those years. He was further recognized when he got opportunities to play in an all-stater game in Hancock as part of Team Michigan and led the team in scoring.

As a senior, Skiba also earned all-conference honors as a member of the Alpena soccer team.

As a youngster, Skiba was a standout house hockey and soccer player, earning hat trick and playmaker awards. In PeeWee hockey, he was a star with Magnaloy Coupler, serving as team captain, leading the team in scoring, and making multiple all-tournament teams.

After a decorated career at Alpena, Skiba played with the Michigan Nationals and Wayne Chiefs. He was the third-leading scorer and MVP for the Chiefs and also served as the team’s captain during the 1992-93 season.

In the coming months, the Hall of Fame board will announce honorees for its annual Team of the Year and Booster of the Year awards.
