ALPENA — Alpena Public Schools and other schools in Northeast Michigan see improved scores on the Michigan School Index system report.
According to a press release put out by Alpena Public Schools, The Michigan School Index System report is an accountability measure required by the federal government under the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015. In the Index, schools are scored on a scale of 0-100 based on how well they met their target goals in the seven different components, the index also uses a school’s performance in those seven components to create an overall index that provides a score to schools based on their performances in the other components.
APS saw an increase in its overall index score based on increases in two components, student proficiency and student growth.
According to the Michigan School Index systems report, the student proficiency component is a combination of student proficiency across the content areas of English language arts and mathematics based on scores from M-STEP, SAT, and MI-Access assessments.
The student growth component is a combination of the percentage of students who are on track to reach or maintain their proficiency within the next three years across the content areas of English language arts and mathematics.
APS saw several large percentage increases across its various schools in either their overall score, student growth score, or their proficiency score.

“We still have a lot of room to grow,” said Rabbideau. “But those index reports showed that every school improved student growth and student proficiency. So those are all positive indicators.
