Alpena Community College proposes possible solar array
ALPENA — A solar array may be coming to Alpena Community College as ACC President Dom MacMaster discusses a potential proposal with the ACC Board of Trustees during the board retreat meeting on Tuesday.
During the meeting, MacMaster discussed with the board some of the upsides, costs, and logistics of the project as of where it is now.
According to MacMaster, the array would generate 1.8 megawatts of power for the college with the possibility of being able to sell any excess energy they don’t use to Alpena Power.
MacMaster also discussed with the board the benefits for different programs the solar array would be.
“The connection to our electrical programs is significant,” MacMaster said to the board about the proposed solar array. “There’s no other place that has the package of electrical programs that we have, including Utility Arborist.”
MacMaster told the board that a lot of this project will be contingent on whether the ACC can obtain a grant from the Michigan Public Service Commission.
“Our approach is to carefully as we can cost up the entire project, and have that be our proposal,” said MacMaster. “If for some reason or another, we don’t get funded, then we either don’t do it or we shrink the footprint across the board.”
