Alpena gymnasts excel at Pure North Classic

ALPENA — Alpena Gymnastics coaches Geri Samp, Billy Brousseau, and Haylee Gagnon smiled as their teams excelled at the 45-degree Pure North Classic Invitational earlier this month at the APlex in Alpena.
In a contest that featured teams from around the state, Alpena’s gymnasts placed in several events, including several first-place finishes and an Alpena team’s first win over a team from Howell, according to a news release from Alpena Gymnastics.
“It was a great way to start the season and we are looking forward to future competitions,” Brousseau said in a statement.
Alpena Gymnastics AAU fielded three different Xcel levels: Silver, Gold and Platinum. The Silver level consists of Livvy Spangle, Aryanna Page, Lydia Allen, Cailyn Peters, Brooklyn Finch, Madison Copping, Addison Adrian, Rachel Grider, Madelyn Coffman, Ambria McKay, Elise Budd and Libby Misiak. The Gold level consists of Abigail Reinhardt, Clare LaCross, Callie Brousseau, and Cece Weaver. The Platinum level consists of Faith Dragiewicz, Brooke Smith, and Paige Samp.
First-place finishes for Silver (younger than 12) included, on the vault, Page (9.30), on the bars, Allen (9.10), on the beam, Allen (9.50), on the floor, Peters (9.30), and all-around, Copping (36.40).
Placing for the Silver (12 years up) were, on the vault, in first place, Misiak (9.40), on the bars, in second place, Misiak (9.15), on the beam, in second place, Finch (9.40), on the floor, in second place, Coffman (9.10), and all-around, in second place, Finch (36.40).
Callie Brousseau won first place in all events for Gold, including the vault (9.30), bars (9.15), beam (8.30), floor (9.60), and all-around (36.35).
Placing for Platinum were, on the vault, in first place, Paige Samp (9.50), on the bars, in first place, Dragiewicz, on the beam, in second place, Paige Samp (8.90), on the floor, in first place, Paige Samp (9.60), and all-around, in first place, Paige Samp (37.25).
The meet featured, from Howell, High Flyers Gymnastics, from Lowell, RAYG Gymnastics, and the first team from the Upper Peninsula to compete in Alpena, West End Gymnastics from Negaunee.
The next competition will be held in Lowell on Dec. 16.
ACC WOMEN LOSE
The Alpena Community College women’s basketball team fell Thursday to Wayne County Community College, 55-77.
