ALPENA — Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are two days of great significance for the Christian church, so it only makes sense that churches would hold services on those days.

One such church is Alpena’s First Presbyterian Church, found on the corner of Long Rapids Road and U.S.-23 North.

According to the church’s pastor, the Rev. William Rayment, Christmas Eve church service will be held at 7 p.m. and the church’s Christmas Day service happens at 10:30 a.m.

Rayment said the Christmas Eve service will consist of both an adult portion and a kids portion.

The adult portion will involve using passages from the Bible to understand the story of Christmas, while the kids portion will have the children decorate a Christmas tree and have the clergy explain the significance of each decoration as they decorate.

Rayment said that the church service on Christmas Day will be more standard.

“The Christmas Day service that we’re having will be the normal service, as well,” said Rayment. “Anyone can come at the regular time.”

Other churches holding holiday services include but are not limited to:

∫ St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 817 Sable St., Alpena, will hold Christmas Eve mass at 4 and 6 p.m. and Christmas Day mass at 10 a.m.

∫ St. Mary Catholic Church, 120 E. Miller St., Alpena, will hold Christmas Eve mass at 8 p.m.

∫ St. Bernard Catholic Church, 322 W. Chisholm St., Alpena, will hold Christmas Day mass at noon

∫ Alpena First United Methodist Church, 167 S. Ripley Boulevard, Alpena, will hold Christmas Eve services at 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.

∫ Immanuel Lutheran Church, 351 Wilson St., will hold Christmas Eve service at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Christmas Day service at 10 a.m.

∫ New Life Lutheran Church, 25 Kirche in the Woods, Spruce, will hold Christmas Eve service at 8 p.m.

∫ Hope Lutheran Church, 5462 Nicholson Hill Road, Hubbard Lake, will hold Christmas Eve service at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

∫ First Congregational United Church of Christ, 201 S. 2nd Ave., Alpena, will hold a Christmas Eve reception lesson and carols at 7 p.m.
