ALPENA — Alpena Public Schools closed today because of “staffing issues,” the district said in a brief email to students and in a post on the district’s Facebook page.

APS Superintendent David Rabbideau said the school district experienced “quite a few staff absences” today, especially across its food service department, and lacked the backup staff to cover those absences because of other staff illnesses and absences.

In a separate Facebook post, the district said an Alpena High School trip to the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is postponed.

Rabbideau said he expects classes will resume on Monday.
